There are multiple formats for DVD media such as DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW,
and DVD+R. Each format has advantages depending on what you need it
for. For purchasing any DVD media, make sure that the device you are
using will support that format.
DVD-R discs are a write-once media. If you plan to create DVDs for
viewing on most home DVD players, the DVD-R format is the most compatible.
DVD-RW is a "re-recordable" or "re-writeable"
format. A DVD-RW has 4.7 GB per side and can be overwritten over 1,000
with a storage life anywhere from 30 to 50 years. This format is mainly
used for video.
DVD+RW is an alternative re-writeable format to DVD-RW. It is designed
mainly for random data recording and video real-time video recording.
DVD+R uses the same 4.7 GB capacity per side but has a write-once
format. It is compatible with both DVD-Video and DVD-ROM equipment.
